Emergency Weather Response Plan
Severe Weather - Lightning
- The Thorguard system is designed to predict the probability of lightning in the area and will often sound the siren before a lightning strike takes place. When Thorguard goes to RED ALERT, the sirens will automatically sound with one long blast. In addition to the sirens, the golf staff will manually trigger the severe weather icon in the golf cart GPS system. This is a visual indicator sent to all carts indicating there is severe weather in the area, and all golfers are directed to seek shelter immediately.
Safe Shelter Locations - Lightning
- Personal Vehicle
- Cart Barn
- Comfort Station Restrooms
- Maintenance Buildings
Once Thorguard measurements indicate an ALL CLEAR, the sirens will automatically sound with three short blasts. This indicates it is safe for golfers to resume outdoor activities.
In addition to the sirens, the golf staff will manually trigger the severe weather icon in the golf cart GPS system. This will remove the severe weather icon on the golf carts and will allow golfers to resume normal GPS operations.
Severe Weather - Tornado
- Tornado warnings may be indicated by the Westfield Center Tornado siren, or a Tornado Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). Either indicator will trigger the following response.
If Thorguard has not already gone to RED ALERT, golf operations staff will manually sound the RED ALERT siren and will trigger the severe weather icon in the golf cart GPS system.
Safe Shelter Locations - Tornado
***During the clubhouse renovation, an underground shelter in the clubhouse is not available. Golfers should seek shelter in the closest building if there is not time to shelter in another location. Buildings may include but are not limited to: ***
- Cart Barn
- Comfort Station Restrooms
- Maintenance Buildings
- Temporary offices in the houses next to the main entrance (6676 & 6684 Greenwich Rd)
If you are in a building, you are unfamiliar with:
- Go to the lowest level of the building,
- Find an interior area (e.g., interior hall, closet, or bathroom) away from exterior doors and windows.
- Seek refuge under a table or desk kneeling face down with your hands covering your head to reduce injury and cover yourself with a coat or other such material.
- Avoid areas that have a large roof span that may collapse, such as auditoriums, garages, etc.
- Fire exit stairwells are built from block construction and may provide shelter.
If you are outside and cannot get inside to a Shelter-in-Place location:
- Lie flat on the ground in a depression (a ditch for example) and cover the back of your head and neck with your hands.
- DO NOT seek cover in a vehicle or under a tree.
If you are driving a vehicle:
- Get out and seek shelter in a building or low area; never try to out drive a tornado.
- Remain in the safe area until you receive an “all clear” message from emergency personnel.
